« The vast majority of Native Americans are struggling to survive. They fight to the point that sometimes they end up forgetting what hope is, so much so that they may be incapable even of thinking of rising above their present condition. »
Steve Reeves – Blackfoot Indian

Out of these thoughts, and the bold dream of its founders, Four Winds was founded in 1995 in Lausanne, Switzerland, to bear witness to this human tragedy and shout loudly outrage.
It was also important for its first members to break the Hollywood stereotype giving a totally distorted picture of American Indians and, even more important, to allow them to communicate their concerns here in Europe.

The first three years of the existence of the Association were necessary to lay its foundations, for the elaboration of the procedures, goals and actions to be led. This hard work allowed in 1998 to organize a first meeting under the name of « Cultural Pow-Wow 1998 » (meeting of various Nations), which took place for three days at Bellerive beach in Lausanne. To the great surprise of all, this event attracted over 5,000 visitors and allowed the invited Nations to attend a wide audience, for lectures, concerts, dances, story-telling and legends.

We still remember that the Native Americans left, after spending a week in Switzerland, the heart full of sharing and contacts they had not expected to be so enriching and positive. Some even spoke of healing with reference to the relationship with the « white man ».
The pow wow therefore became an essential event of our activity and the centerpiece of our actions with regard to the support of Native Americans. Our last pow wow organized in the town of Ornans in France in 2015 (9th edition of the event) hosted more than 15,000 people and has registered as an essential appointment for friends and defenders of the Native American cause.

Let us also mention a literary festival with films called « Feathers and Native American Images » which was created and held in 2011, a cultural part we will now enter up as a significant new commitment of our association. This meeting is a great testimony of the vitality of indigenous writers and filmmakers.
Since its creation Four Winds has also organized lectures, direct supports, seminars and associative meetings which allows the association members to know each other better and to share their passion for the first peoples of America.

In 2010, we established an ethics commission composed of a group of our members who took some time to reflect on our values, on the purpose of our actions (goals) as well as on our behaviour to adopt in all our actions. This in-depth reflection should lead us to search

We still remember that the Native Americans left, after spending a week in Switzerland, the heart full of sharing and contacts they had not expected to be so enriching and positive. Some even spoke of healing with reference to the relationship with the « white man ».

Finally we would like to emphasize that our activities have given an opportunity to more than 550 of our Native American friends to come to our country, to allow us discover their culture and for them to stay among us.. We wish to continue in this direction and give new opportunities to many of them to discover Switzerland and France.
Our next pow-wow is scheduled for the end of June 2018
